Turtle & Hughes Celebrates 100 Years of Innovation

Turtle & Hughes, Inc., one of the nation’s largest privately-held industrial and power distributors, is celebrating 100 years of innovation – and a key focus for its future growth is on the Philadelphia marketplace.

As a 4th generation women-owned and led company, Turtle has long dedicated itself to its customers, delivering extraordinary technical expertise and a deep understanding of their businesses.  Now, with a ten-year track record of growth in Philadelphia, it is building upon its strengths in delivering switchgear, lighting, and industrial materials solutions and advancing energy management solutions.

Having long serviced the Philadelphia region, Turtle established a regional headquarters covering the city and southern New Jersey roughly ten years ago, hiring John Donohue, Vice President of Sales and Branch Manager of the Philadelphia Market, who came to Turtle with 30-plus years of experience in the market.  In 2020, he expanded the office to a 35,000 square foot space in Warminster, PA, with a fleet of seven trucks to service the Tri-State area.  The branch includes lighting and switchgear departments, with dedicated sales professionals to create customer solutions.  It also offers unique items for the pole line, utility, and street lighting markets.

Over the years, customers have included the Philadelphia International Airport, the Metropolitan Opera House, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, hundreds of commercial buildings, and many schools and universities.

Turtle is also one of the leading Women’s Business Enterprises (WBEs) in the region and is certified with the Office of Economic Opportunity. Jayne Millard is the Executive Chairman of the Board and great-granddaughter of one of its founders, M.B. Turtle.

Millard is an award-winning leader, working her way through many positions at Turtle over 32 years.  She rose to CEO in 2010, serving as co-CEO with Kathleen Shanahan for several years until 2020, when Shanahan became the company’s first non-family CEO.  Millard currently drives Turtle’s strategic leadership and its vision for transformative sustainability projects around the world.

One of those projects in the Philadelphia market is Turtle's Energy Management program, which enables customers to save on energy consumption, reduce maintenance costs, and improve productivity.  To help accomplish this, Turtle supports investment-grade proposals for lighting and control upgrades. It identifies customers' strategic goals and creates manageable solutions that include design, implementation, project management, and utility coordination. Also important, Turtle experts will procure all rebates for these projects that are available from the local utility programs, such as PSE&G in New Jersey and PECO in Pennsylvania.

Additionally, Turtle is committed to a diverse workforce with a variety of talents and experiences that help contribute to its customers' business successes. By 2022 year's end, 32.15% of the workforce is female, as well as 32.14% of the managers, 25% of the executive team, and 37.5% of the board.

With pillars of family, technical expertise, and a commitment to sustainability and innovation, Turtle is embarking on its next century with Philadelphia as a key partner.

Tell us a little about the services available through our partnership?

KOAP offers “tailor-made” leadership development sessions for all levels within your organization, targeted at creating a strong sense of “psychological safety” which increases performance, accountability, innovation, and creativeness. All our sessions are facilitated by subject matter experts in their fields of study, who have a passion for transferring knowledge into real-world action in the workplace.  We've been providing these programs to our clients since 2009.

Why should EAP Members work with your company? Are there any special discounts or incentives available to members?

Members of our KOAP team have real world leadership experience that they bring to each session.  While diverse, this includes a leadership background in electrical contracting and distribution, especially meaningful to EAP Members. KOAP offers EAP Members both group and early bird discounts on our programs.

What’s your best professional tip for members?

The biggest room is the room for improvement!  Whether you're a first-time manager or seasoned leader, we all have room to grow and improve.  Most of us train regularly on the hard skills necessary to be the best contractor/distributor/manufacturer but miss developing the "soft skills" that make us better leaders, communicators, coaches, and mentors.
